Ornaments of Serbia - Pirot kilim

The reason for the trip to ancient China was the presentation of the multimedia project "Kaleidoscope of Serbia - Pirot kilim" at the Cultural Center Ivo Andrić in Beijing. The center is located in a fantastic location, in the very center of Art Zone 798, which has become the epicenter of contemporary art in China. Created on the foundations of an old factory, Art District 798 has grown into an international art hub, home to the most important Chinese and foreign galleries, museums, cultural centers and numerous restaurants... Art District 798 is an absolutely essential district on Beijing's tourist map. It was really a big challenge for me to present the Pirot carpet and my work to the Chinese audience in the presence of the diplomatic corps, H.E. Maja Stefanovic Ex Popovic, Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia in the Republic of China, then Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago in China, numerous friends and admirers of cultural heritage.
During the evening, an interesting exchange developed on the topic of the similarity of ornamentation in the folk art of Serbia and China. In addition to promoting books, visitors could see my video works, prints of paintings, jewelry, a selection of pirot carpets from the Nikolić family collection, as well as a film from the opening of the Magic of Pirot carpet exhibition organized by the Silosi Belgrade Cultural Center. They were amazed by the beauty of the patterns, colors, way of weaving and the fact that Pirot carpets have two identical faces. Special thanks to Ensemble VENAC from Gračanica and Cila Mitic, who for this occasion lent me the original dzuba from Prizren that I wore at the opening of the exhibition.
